2011 Vancouver International Tap Dance Festival
At first, plans for this year's festival seemed slow to get off the mark. Had we lost our rhythm? Stuck in a box? Rust on our shoes? No, in fact, major changes and new directions were waiting in the wings to be discovered. As the theme for this year's festival began to evolve, we put our imaginations to work after agreeing: "Let's create some exciting, new performances, presentations and opportunities that we hadn't thought of before!"

Tap superstar Jason Samuels Smith and his company A.C.G.I. (Anybody Can Get It) are bringing a dynamic performance to our festival, Friday, Sept 2.

The company will showcase Samuels Smith's intricate rhythms and original style, while also featuring talented tap soloists: Chloe Arnold, Lee Howard, Sarah Reich and Melinda Sullivan. Making his inaugural visit to our festival, Jakari Sherman, AD, Step Afrika, joins us sharing his unique stepping experience showcasing his innovative and challenging choreography.

We continue to showcase our tap community's bright young stars, from Tap Con Sabor, TapCo and NCYTE Sept. 3. They will join forces and combine their talent and energy in creating a night of tap that no one will forget.

Get out your finest festive attire. We're going back to the '50s, the beloved Supper Club Era. Join us in paying homage to the masters who danced at the legendary Cave Supper Club. We will toast a truly magical bygone era Sept. 4 featuring Danny Nielsen, Travis Knights and Matty Shields, with Jamie Ausmus and Barbara Vargas.

Completing this evening, Terry Brock with Troy McLaughlin will present her personal journey and amazing connection to Eleanor Powell, who also thrilled Cave audiences.

There are some things we don't ever want to change. Among them is Lady Di, Dianne Walker, presenting her invaluable residency and she hosts our special evening at the Waldorf.

I am really excited about this year's festival; it includes some new layers and ideas, even a new location. We are going downtown; classes will be presented in one venue at the large airy studios of the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street.

A Few Words About The Classes

CONTINUOUS CLASSES

Classes scheduled at the same time, with the same instructor, for all 2 or 3 days will be delivered with the intent of covering continuous work over the 2 or 3 days. All single classes that may repeat an instructor, level or narrative are individual classes that are uniquely different - none of these classes are continuous or repeated.

ADULT CLASSES

Dianne WalkerDIANNE WALKER:

Leon Collins' "Routine Two" (Nine hour residency)
Intermediate/Advanced

Collins danced with disarming ease and shimmering speed. He not only taught his students well, he also provided them with exciting opportunities to develop their careers. Dianne recalls: "Leon gave me my foundation." About Routine Two she simply says: "It swings and although all Leon's routines swing, Routine Two, really swings!" There are textured layers to this complex work which are developed as the speed builds.

Here is one of our favourite quotes about Lady Di: "Barely lifting her shoes off the floor, she cast perfect pearls of sound across the waters. So delicate, so sweetly rhythmical, a musical masterpiece," Constance Valis Hill (Tap Dancing America), on Dianne's CHRP '06 performance.

Jakari ShermanJAKARI SHERMAN:

STEP (3-day, continuous)
All Levels

"Stepping is tap dance without tap shoes, James Brown without the music of the JBs, Cab Calloway sans piano, a marching band without John Philip Sousa. It is jazz, funk, rhythm and blues, and rap without instruments. Stepping is lean and mean. The music comes from the synchronized interplay of hands and feet, from chants and hollers. It is a way to make music using the body as instrument." Jakari is thrilled to share his choreography at his inaugural Vancouver festival visit.
